What is Head Start?
Head Start programs prepare America’s most vulnerable young children to succeed in school and in life beyond school. To achieve this, Head Start programs deliver services to children and families in core areas of early learning, health, and family well-being while engaging parents as partners every step of the way.
Head Start primarily serves 3- and 4-year-old children, and Early Head Start serves infants, toddlers, and pregnant women. Head Start services are delivered nationwide through 1,600 agencies which tailor the federal program to the local needs of families in their service area. Early Head Start and Head Start welcome children with disabilities.
Do I Qualify?
Eligibility is generally based on family income at or below the poverty level according to the Poverty Guidelines published by the federal government. Children in foster care, homeless children, and children from families receiving public assistance (TANF or SSI) are eligible regardless of income.
To be eligible for the RCCAA Head Start program, children must be three (3) years old before July 1st. To determine eligibility for public schools/collaborative, children must be four (4) years old before July 1st. Three year-old children may be placed on the wait list after their third birthday, and accepted as slots become available.
To be eligible for the RCCAA Early Head Start program, children must be between the ages of six (6) weeks and three (3) years old to enter. Six months prior to their third (3) birthday we will begin the transition process into the Head Start Program as slots become available. If a child is between six weeks and three months of age, a center shall have on file a statement signed by the child's licensed health care provider permitting the child to enter group care.
